Nazlan Baharudin graduated from the Nottingham School of Architecture in 1984 and has been active in the architectural academia. In his pursuit for a return to the traditional master-skills of the architect, he began his international foray with Sir Miles Warren of Architecture Warren & Mahoney, and Thom Craig Architects on designing a number of theatres for the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, and other institutional projects including schools, colleges, polytechnics, university buildings and campuses.
In over 40 years within the construction industry, Nazlan’s practice Akitek Rekabina has built a strong portfolio of projects with designs and buildings of the institutional and public sector. Following from Akitek Rekabina’s exhibited works at the 2010 Venice Biennale, more design and award-winning schemes were garnered, namely PAM Awards for MARA’s KKTM Campus in Penang, a new Business School for Universiti Malaya, the Wawasan 2020 Clock Tower at Dataran Merdeka, and the Academy of Sciences Malaysia Head Office.
He has been visiting several schools of architecture in Malaysia as tutor, design critique and external examiner, and had delivered several papers and lectures on Architectural Practice and International Design Collaboration. In 2013, he was nominated as Fellow of PAM for recognition of his works in architecture.
Akitek Rekabina has strategic collaborative links with several international architectural firms, including Thom Craig Architects of New Zealand and Bicuadro Architetti of Italy. These partnerships have made possible the synthesis of creative cultures and ideas with the best of East and West in espousing ‘Local Inspirations with Global Visions’.
