Designing Buildings As Proxy Ecosystems
Dato’ Dr. Ken Yeang is an architect, planner and ecologist who is best known for his signature green architecture and masterplans, differentiated by an ecology-based approach, distinctive green aesthetic and performances beyond conventional rating systems. He trained at the AA School (Architectural Association, UK) and received his doctorate from Cambridge University on ‘ecological design and planning’. His key buildings include Solaris (Singapore), Mesiniaga Tower (Malaysia), Spire Edge Tower (India), Genome Research Building (Hong Kong), Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital Extension (UK) and Suasana Putrajaya (Putrajaya). He is principal of T. R. Hamzah & Yeang Sdn. Bhd. (Malaysia) with offices in the UK and China.
Dato’ Dr. Ken Yeang has received numerous awards, including the Gold Medal by the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM), the Merdeka Award by the Government of Malaysia and the Liangsicheng Award 2016 by the Architectural Society of China to name a few. Previous Past President of PAM and ARCASIA, he currently holds the chair of the Distinguished Plym Professor at the University of Illinois (USA).

The firm, originally founded by Tengku Robert Hamzah, has been in existence since 1975 with its HQ in Malaysia with offices in UK as Llewelyn Davies Ken Yeang Ltd., and China (8 branches) as North Hamzah-Yeang Architecture and Engineering Design Co. Ltd. The firm is known for their signature hyper green architecture and masterplans, as relevant to the benign integration of architecture with the landscape as their distinctive approach.
