Emotion in Architecture
BOONSERM PREMTHADA was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts (Interior Design) with first class honors in 1988, Masters of Architecture from Chulalongkorn University in 2002 and established Bangkok Project Studio in 2003.
Boonserm believes that architecture is the physical creation of an atmosphere that serves to heighten man’s awareness of his natural surroundings. His work ethos isn’t about designing a building, but rather the manipulation of light, shadow, wind, sound, and smell... creating the “poetics in architecture” as a sense of a living being.
Focusing beyond the realms of theory and practice, Boonserm’s work also carries a strong socio-economic and cultural agenda as many of his projects have social programmes that aim to improve the lives of the under-privileged.
The Kantana Film and Animation Institute is a prime example of Boonserm’s theoretical and real-world ideals. The architecture embodies architecture from “Modern” to “Timeless”. The project was selected as the Grand Prize Winner of the ar+d Awards for Emerging Architecture in 2011. It was also shortlisted for the 2013 cycle of the Aga Khan Awards for Architecture, Grand Prize and Category winner special solution International Brick Architecture 2014, Wienerberger Vienna Austria, Winner Silver Category for “Public Buildings, Sports and Recreation” Fritz-Höger-Preis für Backstein-Architektur 2014 Germany, Award 21 for 21 World Architecture News 2012 United Kingdom, Highly commended at the World Architecture Festival 2012 United Kingdom and numerous other international awards.
The visibility of his work has led to invitations for lectures and exhibitions at several institutions such as Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Indian Institute of Architects, University of Tokyo, University of Hong Kong, National University of Singapore and several other international universities.
Outside of his role of architect and artist, Boonserm also is an assistant professor of the Department of Interior Architecture at Chulalongkorn University.
