Towers of Landscape
Founded in 2000, Ensamble is a cross-functional team led by architects ANTÓN GARCÍA-ABRIl and DÉBORA MESA. Balancing education, research and practice, the office explores both innovative approaches and applied technologies to architectural and urban spaces. Among the studio’s distinctive projects are the Hemeroscopium House and Reader’s House in Madrid (Spain), Music Studies Center and SGAE Central Office in Santiago de Compostela (Spain), The Truffle in Costa da Morte (Spain), Telcel Theater in Mexico City and, more recently, the Cyclopean House in Brookline (USA) and Structures of Landscape for Tippet Rise Art Center in Montana (USA).
Their work has been extensively published and exhibited world-wide, distinctively at the Venice Architecture Biennale (2010, 2016), GA International Exhibitions in Tokyo (2010-2016), MOMA New York 2015, MAK Vienna 2015, Massachusettes Institute of Technology (MIT) 2015 and the Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture 2013 in Shenzhen. The 2016 NCSEA Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards, Iakov Chernikhov Prize 2012, Rice Design Alliance Prize 2009 to emerging architects and Architectural Record Design Vanguard Prize 2005 are amongst the awards garnered by Ensamble Studio. The principals were curators of Spainlab, the Spanish Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2012, and founded POPlab (Prototypes of Prefabrication Research Laboratory) at the MIT.
ANTÓN GARCÍA-ABRIL, (Madrid, 1969) is a Registered Architect in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and European PhD Architect by the Polytechnic University of Madrid (E.T.S.A.M.U.P.M.) The 1996 recipient of the Spanish Academy Research Prize in Rome established Ensamble Studio architecture office in 2000 and has extensive academic experiences, He served as associate professor for a decade at the School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (E.T.S.A.M.U.P.M.), and has visited numerous universities as an invited professor; at the MIT in 2011, Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 2010, Cornell University in 2008 and University of Texas in 2006, amongst others. Currently, he is a professor at the School of Architecture and Planning of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) since 2012.
DEBORA MESA MOLINA, (Madrid, 1981) is an European Licensed Architect by the Polytechnic University of Madrid (E.T.S.A.M.U.P.M.). She joined Ensamble Studio in 2003 and was made partner in 2010 after playing a major role in the realization of numerous projects and works. She is currently visiting professor at The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union in New York and research scientist of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.). She serves as architecture critic at different universities, and as an invited professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2011 and Cornell University in 2008. Debora was also teaching advisor at the Polytechnic University of Madrid while completing her doctorate studies in 2009 and 2010.
